Three 10-year-old school friends raise almost £500 at Ripley Farmer’s Market

Three young conservationists, motivated by the plight of the Hen Harrier in the UK, decided to raise funds by taking a stall at the local Farmer’s Market in Ripley, Surrey, on the 9th November.

10-year-olds Lucy, Lana, and Emily sold homemade cakes and biscuits, eco-friendly homemade bird feeders and bird boxes, 3D-printed corn starch birds and second-hand toys and books. Their stall was very popular, and the three friends from Guildford High School raised a total of £429.39 for Hen Harrier Action on the day.

But the fundraising didn’t end there, with the girls’ classmates contributing an extra £10 from a collection, and further donations of £60 taking the total to an astonishing £500!

Everyone who visited the girls’ busy stall during the Farmer’s Market not only got the chance to buy delicious biscuits and cakes, and browse the second-hand toys and books, but there was also plenty of information about the plight of endangered Hen Harriers in the UK.

It was Lana who first came across Hen Harriers, in the mystery adventure book Twitch by M G Leonard, about a young birdwatching detective. She then discovered through the RSPB website that they were critically endangered, and enlisted her friends Lucy and Emily to take action.
