A Helping Hand for Upland Wildlife
Protecting and celebrating upland nature and biodiversity
Welcome to the Hen Harrier Day website, run by Hen Harrier Action, which celebrates and protects the wildlife of our uplands. We do this in a number of ways, including an annual Skydancer Day live broadcast, raising funds through appeals, and supporting and promoting events and Hen Harrier Days around the UK and online. These events aim to provide information about and celebrate the wildlife of the uplands and the problems it faces. They are also an occasion to raise our voices against the main reason for the Hen Harrier’s rarity in the UK– illegal persecution. Read our 2024 Review of the Year to find out more about what we do.
A place where nature thrives
Our vision is of the UK’s uplands as places where all nature thrives unharmed by human activity. Places where people can enjoy a rich and diverse environment in harmony with nature rather than in conflict with it. Places where the land is managed sustainably and proactively to increase biodiversity and protect and encourage all the species that call it home.
Ways that you can help
There are a number of ways to become involved with our work – the News & Events pages and the Get Involved menu are helpful places to look for more information – and of course you can contact us if you would like to help: info@henharrier.org.uk
2025 Christmas Satellite Tag Appeal
December 2025: Hen Harrier Action Launches New Christmas Satellite Tag Appeal in Response to Suspicious Death of Hen Harrier Circe
Following the suspicious disappearance of young Hen Harrier Circe in the Moorfoot Hills south of Edinburgh, we have launched a fresh fundraising appeal to satellite tag more Hen Harriers.
Circe, satellite tagged by RSPB fieldworkers on the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve in June, was just four months old when her tag stopped transmitting suddenly, indicating she was highly likely to have been illegally killed.
In the days leading up to her disappearance Circe ranged across the Moorfoot Hills, south of Edinburgh. Her tag data shows that the tag was regularly transmitting but then sudden stopped with no sign of tag malfunction. The disappearance was reported to the National Wildlife Crime Unit and the area was searched but no body or tag has been found.
The Christmas Appeal, launched this week on GoFundMe, aims to raise £15,000 to fund 5 satellite tags to be fitted to fledging Hen Harriers next summer throughout the UK.
This Christmas, we're raising funds to protect one of Britain's most persecuted birds of prey - the Hen Harrier. Every donation goes directly to buy satellite tags. For a future where Hen Harriers can thrive without persecution, please support our appeal.https://t.co/KOlV3shS7x pic.twitter.com/YIBNnTAO3u
